Coming of the King: The Season of Advent! - Letter from the Rector

As we approach the new Church year, leaders of the church have discerned that we have an opportunity to do something a little different, something we’ve never done before.

For the last few years, we have done “Santa’s Warehouse”, which was an outreach to families from League City Elementary School. We gathered toys and staged them in Buckner Hall, inviting these families to come shop for Christmas toys, while the children did arts and crafts.

Earlier this year, it was discovered that Interfaith Caring Ministries, with which we have a long history and relationship, was doing the same outreach effort, at a much larger scale and inviting the same families.

Rather than reinventing the wheel, we have decided to partner with ICM and collect toys for their outreach to League City Elementary. Beginning this Sunday, November 5th, we will have a board outside the Welcome Center, identifying the opportunities we have as a congregation to purchase toys for these families in need. In early December, ICM will have their event for families, and we will be calling on everyone who is able to volunteer.

However, this change leaves a hole on our campus, and a hole in our Advent plans. The staff and leaders of “Santa’s Warehouse”, listening to the movement of the Spirit and wanting to continue to create opportunities for St. Christopher to be in relationship with our community neighbors, have come up with an exciting new gathering that I’m certain will become a new tradition at St. Christopher.

It’s called “Coming of the King: The Season of Advent!” It will take place on Saturday, December 2nd from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in Buckner Hall. At “Coming of the King”, St. Christopher families and our neighbors will be invited join us for an opportunity to learn more about the season of Advent, and will include fun family activities like making an Advent Wreath, creating a manger scene, making Advent cookies and Christmas tree ornaments, and even a visit from St. Nicholas!

The entire St. Christopher family is invited to participate, and we encourage you to invite your neighbors and friends. Child care will be available for small children. This will be an open house format, so there is no set program, other than the 2:00 - 4:00 timeframe.

Mark your calendars for December 2nd, and come be a part of this exciting new inreach and outreach tradition!
